SUMMARY:Chanukkah in Chelm at Ashkenaz - with Saul Goodman's Klezmer Band!
DESCRIPTION:  \n \nWhat better way to usher in the choliday season that with Chanukkah stories and music?  And where better to hear such stories than at Ashkenaz? \nJoel will be spinning traditional Yiddish folktales from Chelm\, the mythical town of fools\, located in the Jewish imagination somewhere on the road from Warsaw and Chotzenplotz.  Though these stories are fun anywhere\, any time\, they’re particularly delightful around Kchaanukkah\, which starts one week later\, and best of all with Klezmer music by Saul Goodman. \nYou’ll discover just how the very first schlemiel came to be\, hear other Yiddish tales\, and pick up some favorite new Yiddish words as well.  There will also be a first-ever Honukkah spelling bee\, with prizes\, and activities by PJ Our Way\, publishers of a special edition of Dreidels on the Brain. This event is also co-sponsored by Silk Road House\, beloved home to storytelling in Berkeley. \nTickets are $15 in advance (at Ashkenaz website) $20 on the day of\, with kids 12-under free.  Best for children ages five and up. \n  \n \n  \n\nFor this evening’s concert\, Saul Goodman’s Klezmer Band will feature Mike Perlmutter on clarinet and bass clarinet\, Dave Rosenfeld on mandolin and violin\, Ilana Sherer on violin\, Dan Cantrell on accordion\, Jonathan Simon on xylophone\, percussion\, and foley\, and Aaron Kierbal on drums.   \nUnfortunately\, Saul Goodman himself – who has not been seen in many a year – will be present only in spirit. SUMMARY:Finding and Telling our Healing Stories - Rancho la Puerta!
DESCRIPTION:Finding and Telling Our Healing Stories\nRancho la Puerta is one of the most beautiful places in the world – and a perfect place for finding and sharing stories. \nJoel’s storytelling is one of many inspiring and healing offerings throughout the week at the ranch\, from yoga to meditation to hiking to dance to lectures\, all with fantastic\, healthy food. It varies each week\, so check out their web site to get a full sense of what Rancho la Puerta offers\, their rates and so on. \n \n  \nAs for storytelling\, Joel will kick off the week with an evening presentation on “Stories of Wisdom\, Stories of Healing.” The class portion of Joel’s teaching runs 45 minutes over the course of four days\, gathered around a beautiful stone fireplace in the Oaktree Pavilion. While our stories naturally spill over into other activities\, the week at Rancho la Puerta shouldn’t be seen as a storytelling intensive\, but as a wonderful healing experience\, in which stories play a part. \nThe focus of those workshops will be to find and tell those stories that lie hidden in the distant corners or our memories and imaginations\, treasures amidst the detritus of life. When we discover these stories\, they can bring back wisdom we gained long ago\, but have somehow forgotten. And when we share these stories\, they can bring about a healing of the spirit\, which is something we all need. \n \n

SUMMARY:TO CHELM AND BACK!
DESCRIPTION:  \nCome hear Joel spin tales of the fools of Chelm at the Oshman Family JCC in Palo Alto!  In case you don’t know Chelm\, it’s that tiny village in the Jewish imagination\, located on the road from Warsaw to Chotzenplotz\, where people are so foolish they believe they are wise.  Joel’s stories will be accompanied by musicians from the Philharmonia Baroque Orchestra\, playing klezmer-inspired tunes.  It’s a great way to spend lunch laughing – and who doesn’t need a good laugh\, especially these days?

SUMMARY:Harvesting the Stories of Our Lives - Stagebridge Workshop
DESCRIPTION:  \n  \n \n  \nStagebridge in Oakland offers great classes and workshops in all fields of storytelling.  I’m pleased to be offering a two hour workshop on finding and telling some of the richest stories we know\, just below the surface of our lives. This is a chance to see what’s there\, through fun\, participatory exercises that will help you find your stories as you discover techniques to bring them to life. The emphasis is on sharing stories\, rather than performance\, but will likely generate story material for those who wish to present it at larger venues. Either way\, you can count on having a good time\, honing your story skills and coming away with stories you did not know you knew. \nMy workshop is in the morning (9:30-11:30). If you’d like to make a day of it\, there are two other workshops with great teachers – Nancy Wang of Eth-Noh-Tec (12:00-2:00) and Willy Claflin 2:30-4:30.  Signing up for more than one workshops that day gives a discount on the price.  Check out the Stagebridge web site: \nStagebridge Storytelling Workshops\, March 24\, 2018

SUMMARY:Los Altos Library 4th Annual Storytelling Festival - Truth and Lies!
DESCRIPTION:Joel will be featured performer along with a host of local tellers\, where the theme is Truth and Lies.   What’s more\, he’ll do the whole set without a single  reference to our so-called President. (And\, if you believe that\, you really don’t know the difference between truth and lies\, so you’ll definitely want to come. \nAfterwards he’ll be signing books and CDs\, including How I Learned to Love Liver – and other tales too tall to tell\, on which every single word is completely true.  He’ll also have copies of his award-winning book Dreidels on the Brain – just in time for Hanukkah\, which starts on the 12th. \nHere’s the info – Truth and Lies at Los Altos Library
